The Living Science of Life
doṣa dhātu mala kriyāḥ samyak avasthānam, svasthasya lakṣaṇam
(Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdayam Sūtrasthāna 1.24)
Health is the balanced state of the doṣas (vata, pitta, kapha), the dhātus (tissues), and malas (waste products), along with proper functioning of their respective actions.
In Ayurveda, health is not defined by the absence of disease—but by the presence of balance.
What is Ayurveda?
One of the world’s oldest healing systems, developed in India more than 5,000 years ago.
The word means “knowledge of life”—āyus (life) and veda (knowledge).
At its core, Ayurveda is about understanding who you are, how your body and mind work, and how to live in rhythm with nature.
It sees health as a state of balance—when your physical body, emotions, mind, and spirit are in harmony with the world around you.
Ayurveda looks at the whole person—your lifestyle, digestion, sleep, emotions, relationships, even the seasons you’re living through.
The Basics: A Very Simplistic Understanding
We are made from the same elements as the universe: Water, Earth, Air, Fire, Ether
We are made of the same five elements as everything in nature: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements don’t just sit in the body—they combine in pairs to create movement, change, and structure. The doṣas are the working expressions of the elements. They turn earth, water, fire, air, and space into the energy that runs your body and mind.
Each of us is born with a unique combination of these doṣas—our prakṛti, or constitution. When our lifestyle, food, stress, or environment throws these out of balance, we experience vikṛti, or imbalance.
Body’s Natural Functioning
When the following all function harmoniously together, we are in a state of good health. In Sanskrit, the word used is svastha meaning “established in the self".”
Doṣas (the elemental energies of movement, transformation, and structure),
Dhātus (the seven bodily tissues: Plasma, Blood, Muscle, Fat, Bone, Marrow, Reproductive tissue)
Malas (waste products like sweat, urine, and stool), and
Body’s natural actions (like digestion, respiration, and circulation)
From this lens, symptoms are not random—they are invitations to return to balance, to listen, and to heal at the root.
